WIN! 2 Copies of Firsthand up for grabs

Posted by Pete McM on 24th, 2013

Everyone likes getting something for free right? And to mark All4God reachin 9000 twitter followers (@all4God) we thought it would be a good idea to give away a couple of copies of the new book Firsthand by Ryan and Josh Shook.

Firsthand is about a journey to find a faith of your own.
A faith that isn’t your parents’ or your youth pastor’s or your church’s.
Starting from scratch, questioning everything, and getting hold of a faith that’s real - firsthand faith.

So how can you win a copy? It is really simple – all you have to do is make sure you are following all4God on twitter, and then re-tweet any of the tweets we make this weekend (between 2:30pm today Friday and 10pm on Sunday 26th May) – we will then pick a tweet at random and then pick two people who have retweeted it to get a copy of Firsthand sent to them. The more of our tweets you retweet, the more chances you have to win. In order for your retweet to register it must be made through the Twitter “new style” retweet. To win you must be following all4God so that we can DM you for postal details. For postage reasons winners must be in the UK, Ireland or USA – if a winner is from the UK/Ireland the book will be sent out next week, if they are in the USA it will be mailed when Pete is over in the summer. Winners will be announced at the start of next week – get retweeting!

Made Alive – Citizens

Posted by Wednesday Worship on 22nd, 2013

For our worship song of the week this week we are highlighting the brilliant song “Made Alive” by Citizens, which is a very catchy reminder that through Christ we are made alive and our sins have been erased, by His grace we are saved. Citizens are a very hip indie worship band from Mars Hill, Seattle, and they recently did an interview with us here at All4God.

Give Made Alive a listen, and take time to thank Jesus for the amazing gift of new life He gives each of us when we put our trust in Him.

Stop acting your age

Posted by Allyssa Hampson on 21st, 2013

{Intro from Pete: It is my pleasure to introduce a new guest contributor, one of my five star friends Allyssa, who I have worked with at Beaver Cross and who last summer was one of my running partners – even though she couldn’t handle my pace… It is particularly neat for me to have her write for All4God as I know over the past few years she has been a big fan of All4God and has been a great source of encouragement for me with regards my writing so it is cool to now be able to share some of her great thoughts with you all.}

*                    *                      *

Ever since I was a little kid my favorite passage in the bible has been Mark 10:13-16 NIV(Luke 18:15-17 and Matthew 19:13-15). It is a small passage, only three to four verses, but what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in meaning.

“People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.” (Mark 10:13-16 NIV)

Usually we are told “grow up and start acting your age”, and here Jesus is telling us to stop acting our age and to be like children, or we won’t get into heaven! Now that doesn’t make much sense. Doesn’t God want mature and responsible adults in heaven? The answer is no, he doesn’t. Continue reading this →

Things Christians Don’t Say

Posted by Pete McM on 17th, 2013

If you have been on Facebook this week you may have seen various humourous “Things XXXXXX Don’t Say” pages popping up, probably as students try to procrastinate from exam studying. And because we know everyone loves a good Christian parody to jump on the bandwagon, we at All4God have set up “Things Christians Don’t Say“.

The whole point of these pages is that most of the statements made are either ones that the group in question technically shouldn’t say but in reality do or things that they don’t say but really should be able to. Here are some of our examples of Things Christians Don’t Say:

  • I don’t find the Air1 playlist repetitive. In fact I wish they played my favourite songs more, I hardly ever hear them.
  • I can totally spell Habakkuk without having to look it up
  • I watch Friday Night Lights purely because they go to church a lot, not because of Tim Riggins/Lyla Garrity
  • I go to the evening service as I prefer the worship there, not because it allows me a long Sunday morning lie-in
  • The sermon was an hour long and I didn’t check twitter once during it
  • I went to a Christian college purely for the quality of teaching with no thoughts of getting a Ring By Spring

For more be sure to “Like” Things Christians Don’t Say on facebook, where it is rapidly becoming the latest viral sensation (and then tell all your friends so it gets more popular and then you can later brag to them about liking it from the very start…)

QUESTION: What are your suggestions of “Things Christians Don’t Say”?

Humble Orthodoxy – Joshua Harris

Posted by Pete McM on 14th, 2013

Joshua Harris is an author I massively respect. He has written some great books, from I kissed dating goodbye (which I recommend all my single guy friends and none of my single female friends read…) to the excellent very accessible systematic theology book Dug Down Deep.

He has recently released a new book, Humble Orthodoxy which is all about the need for us to cling firmly to solid doctrine, being uncompromising in our orthodoxy, but to do so with a humble attitude so as not to put others off our message by our approach.

He starts off by looking at what right thinking about God is, setting out solid truths that are taught in the Bible that we must not compromise on, even though they may not be popular with society. He then moves to look at how we need to defend this truth with compass and humility. This is a book that is soaked full of God’s word, and one of the central passages is Paul’s message to Timothy, in 2 Timothy 2:23-26  when Paul urges Timothy not to be quarrelsome but to be kind to everyone.
